View from a Dartmoor Tor

I am a glassmaker inspired by my surroundings, living amidst the rugged beauty of Dartmoor and drawing influence from Devon's north and south coasts. My work ranges from wearable pendants to larger wall pieces that capture the essence of these landscapes.

Glass is a perfect medium as it celebrates the beauty of colour and light to interpret landscapes and the ability to capture depth. The processes and techniques are endless, along with the complexity glass brings. The mix of science and art nurtures my passion, creativity, and curiosity to hone my skills as a maker and artist.

Glass Pendants

Each pendant is crafted with up to four layers of art glass, combining sheet glass, crushed glass, powdered glass, and enamels. These elements are meticulously arranged to create depth, texture, and vibrancy, requiring multiple firings to achieve the desired effect.

During firing, the glass is carefully pressed to achieve a refined thinness, resulting in a lightweight yet durable piece. Once cooled, the glass is cut, ground, and polished to perfect its shape and surface. Additional Intricate details are added using hand-applied techniques, screen printing, and photographic transfers from images I capture during my explorations, along with collage of these elements to add depth and texture. The piece then returns to the kiln for a final fire polish, enhancing its smoothness and creating a glossy finish.

Each pendant is completed with a hallmarked sterling silver bail and is individually named to reflect its unique story and character.

Wall Pieces and Beyond

Larger glass pieces provide an opportunity to capture the beauty of landscapes in greater detail, with layers of glass intricately arranged to create compelling scenes. These pieces follow a similar process to the pendants but require slower, longer firing schedules and often more than five firings to achieve their depth and complexity. Each piece is framed on art glass to minimise reflections and set within a box frame, designed to enhance the artwork by allowing more light to interact with the layers.

Fine art prints and notecards of these works celebrate the artistry of the originals, offering a versatile way to share and enjoy the unique landscapes they depict.
